One of the most common questions that comes up before a photo session is very simple: “What should I wear?”

After many years of photographing people in different contexts, I’ve noticed a few things that consistently work well in photos. These are not strict rules and shouldn’t be treated as such, but rather recommendations based on experience that, most of the time, help images look better.

Why light colors work so well in photographs

In general, light or neutral colors tend to look very good in photographs. White, light grey, cream, or other soft tones usually create clean and balanced images.

One simple reason is that these colors reflect light better and help the subject stand out in the frame. They often create that subtle “pop” effect, where the person being photographed appears to stand slightly forward from the background.

This doesn’t mean stronger colors should be avoided completely, but lighter tones are generally easier to integrate visually in photographs.

What happens when wearing very dark clothes

Very dark clothing, especially black, behaves differently in photographs.

Black tends to hide the shape of the body, which shifts most of the attention almost entirely to the head and face. In some situations this can create an interesting effect, but in many cases it reduces the overall visual balance of the image.

Another detail I’ve often noticed is that when wearing black, the face tends to pick up more of the ambient colors around it — reflections from nearby surfaces, colored walls, artificial light, and so on. Lighter clothing, on the other hand, reflects more light and usually creates a more even look.

Accessories can make photos more interesting

One thing that can help a lot during a photoshoot is accessories.

They don’t need to be anything over the top, but simple items like a hat, a pair of sunglasses, a jacket, a scarf or even a bag can add variety to your photos. Besides slightly changing the look of an outfit, accessories also give more ideas for frames and natural gestures.

Many people don’t know exactly what to do with their hands in front of the camera, and accessories can solve this very easily. It becomes easier to relax and interact naturally with what you’re wearing.

Sometimes, these small details are exactly what add personality and make the images feel more natural.

Clothes with pockets offer more posing options

A small but very useful detail is having pockets on your clothes.

Outfits that include pockets, such as pants, blazers or jackets, offer many more natural posing options for photos. The simple gesture of putting your hands in your pockets can create a relaxed and natural posture.

On the other hand, with some very simple outfits, like certain dresses without pockets, the posing options can be more limited. It’s not necessarily a problem, but sometimes accessories or an extra clothing piece can help a lot with adding variety to the photos.

Simplicity almost always works

In photography, simplicity helps a lot.

Clothing with very busy patterns, large logos, or heavy prints can easily distract attention from the person being photographed.

Most of the time, simple clothing pieces tend to work best.

Comfort matters more than any rule

No matter how good an outfit may look on paper, if you don’t feel comfortable wearing it, that will show in the photos.

Posture, facial expression, and body language are strongly influenced by how you feel. If you feel stiff because the clothes don’t represent you or don’t feel natural, the photographs will reflect that.

That’s why it’s much more important to choose something that feels natural and comfortable to you, even if it doesn’t follow all the recommendations mentioned above.

Why a second outfit can make a big difference

One thing I almost always recommend is bringing a second outfit.

Ideally, it should be quite different from the first one. For example:

  • one lighter and brighter
  • one darker or more elegant

This change adds visual variety to the photos and makes the final gallery feel more diverse.

Check your outfit before the photo session

If you feel that it suits you, represents you, and you like how it looks, there’s a very good chance it will work well in photos too.

After all the technical recommendations related to colors or style, the most important thing remains the final result: the photos should represent you and make you look your best.

And when you feel good in what you’re wearing, that almost always shows in the pictures.
